Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time - Anime Review

As I’m a big fan of the classic anime series from 1995, here are my thoughts to the conclusion, of this movie series. I thought this movie was simply an visual, sound and character masterclass. I thought the first hour of this movie where Rei, Asuka, and Shinji try to live in Tokyo 3, was great. I also thought that the first hour of this movie explored the side characters of the franchise from the Evangelion TV series well. I’m happy that Hikari and Toji got together in this movie, and I liked the moments where Miss Look A Like (Rei clone from Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo) is able to make Tsubane (Toji’s and Hikaru’s baby) happy. On the subject of Rei, I thought near the end of this movie, that seeing Rei with long hair, suited her a lot. I thought the moment in this movie where Mari cuts Asuka’s hair was a good scene IMO, as it shows how close the two females are.

I thought the introduction of the white experimental plug suits for Asuka and Mari, was a marketing and fan-service idea, but I can see how this is also an plot element. I thought the action scene where Asuka and Mari are using their respective Evangelion’s to break into Nerv headquarters was the highlight action scene for me. As I have seen Evangelion Death and Rebirth movie from the late 1990’s, I thought that it was great seeing some and different imagery from this movie, in the final Evangelion Renewal movie franchise.

What I really liked about this movie, is the song One Last Kiss by Hikaru Utada playing in the end credits of this movie, alongside a remix of the song Beautiful World. I enjoyed watching the end credits of this movie, and IMO both songs concluded this movie franchise, on a perfect end point. Overall, I thought that this movie was perfect, and I can’t wait to rewatch the Evangelion franchise again, when I get a free moment.
